Maggie Smith, longtime star of screen and stage, is entering a new phase of her storied career: Fashion It Girl. The star features in the new Spring Summer 2024 pre-collection campaign from Loewe, in three new images shot by Juergen Teller for the brand.
Smith, who was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth in 1990, has won two Oscars, five BAFTAs, three Emmys, and a Tony. She’s starred in films like Death on the Nile, Richard III, and Gosford Park, but younger generations may know her best from her beloved tern as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the eight Harry Potter films and as Violet Crawley the Downtown Abbey show and movies.
Other stars of the Loewe campaign include Mike Faist, Josh O’Conner, Dakota Fanning, Greta Lee, and Fei Fei Sun. As the brand notes, “Seen though Teller’s signature unapologetic gaze, which highlights imperfection as the ultimate perfection, the stars of the campaign wear reproportioned classics from the collection: simple knits, jeans, denim tops and skirts, shearling coats and leather pieces, all adding up to an overall sense of twisted realism.”
Smith has spent decades in the public eye. “I find it very odd to be recognized,” Smith said a 2016 interview. “I’ve spent a very long time without that happening to me. And it’s a very, very strange sensation…Sometimes it’s very nice. But sometimes, you just would like to be on your own, to do things on your own, without thinking about whether you’re going to be stalked or asked to pose for one of those wretched cellphone things.”
The actress has kept a lower profile in recent years, but was spotted this summer at Wimbledon and was among those who attended King Charles’s coronation in May.
